A Curatorial Review of Angélica Guerrero in the 2024 Show

This is a curatorial review of Angélica Guerrero in the 2024 Show of the work: Le Jardin des Delices Artistiques (2024).

Guerrero’s Le Jardin des Delices Artistiques (2024) is filled with iconic art history references, from Yayoi Kusama’s yellow polka dot Pumpkins to Duchamps Fountain (1917) (which perhaps should also be credited to Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven; see this article).

Most fascinatingly, the painting does not focus on just one time period and rather spans the whole of art history, similar to Bosch’s triptych in which the exterior panels depict the creation of the world to the interior from the Garden of Eden to Hell. Guerrero uses the central panel of Bosch’s triptych and recreates it, while the earlier art history references could potentially be linked to creation.

Taking this chronology- the artwork tells a story of humanity’s interest in the arts and the ever-changing art world: from the Terracotta Warriors to Romanticism (and many other movements) to the present day.

However, the biggest difference between Bosch’s work and Guerrero’s work is that Bosch explored the moral realm and denounced earthly delight, while this reinterpretation celebrates artistic creativity and progress.

Overall, Guerrero’s work showcases great knowledge of art history and technique. The artwork blends the references into a somewhat collage-style insertion.

However, these are not collages but rather painted directly onto the work. Thus, showing the talent and skill of the artist in great detail alongside the works merging into the background helps to give it a more natural appearance rather than sticking out.
