This is a curatorial review of Jessica Lawrence’s work in the 2024 Show, which you can see here.

The Vibe (2024) is a portrait of a model with which the model has a very self-assured poised demeanour. The choice of background colour allows for the individual to pop out of the painting. It contrasts well as the background colour is muted when compared to the model who has white hair and red lipstick. These two elements, which pop out, bring the viewers gaze to the face allowing for the personality to shine through the model who is wearing sunglasses along with the bold red lipstick which creates a form of sophistication and confidence.

Zamora (2024) is a very impressionistic work as from the first glance at the work, you will first see the brushstrokes which create the work as the texture is exposed. The texture of these brushstrokes are very gritty and give the townscape an aged appearance. This results in a very loose-looking abstraction of the details that allows for the viewer to imagine the buildings and ambiance of the town.
Zooming into the ambiance of this town, we can see a building at the centre of the work seeming aged against more modern buildings. Therefore, this juxtaposes the townscape against the present and the past harmoniously.
Overall, Jessica Lawrences work in the 2024 Show highlights her skill in conveying the subjects emotions of the painting and creating atmosphere.
