Curatorial Review of Lee Smith in the Meta Space Spring Show

Portrait of Chucky (2024) is a realistic painting of Chucky that successfully captures the menacing presence of Chucky and the eeriness of the character. The painting technique pays great attention to the details within Chucky’s face, especially with the scars and staples within the face adding to the menacing atmosphere of the painting. Furthermore, the lighting and shadows of the work are successful in giving dimension to the work.

Portrait of Freddy (2025) brings us directly to the texture of Freddy Kruger’s skin with its extreme scarring, grotesque texture and fleshy inconsistencies from the burnt skin. The posture of Kruger in this work has him slightly tilting towards the viewer with the blades raised out implying that he’s about to do something if he could leave the painting. His expression further exemplifies this as he has a very threatening grin and his eyes are directly gazing towards the viewer.

Portrait of Jason (2025) shows Jason Voorhees looking straight towards the viewer. The hockey mask is textured as though it is extremely grimy, with the occasional watered-down blood marks and the bloodier gashes that appear just below the eyes. The eyes are just barely visible and seem to be more of a blank void that implies the character’s soullessness. Voorhees is contrasted against a black background giving full prominence to him; while the shadows and the strong highlights emphasise the ghostly and emotionless appearance.

Overall, the three portraits are all skillfully painted and create a frightening atmosphere from the characters. The characters are directly glaring at the viewer which allows them to confront us as though they are coming out of the painting with their menacing presences. Thus, these are wonderful tributes to the films as they present the characters true to their personalities and exert the horror atmosphere perfectly.
