Black Widow (2023) reflects on form and perception through the meditative engagement with light and dark. If black, devoid of light, is the beginning of all life and the foundation of the universe then the work invokes this state. The movements and textures of the work (which seem to form mandala-like shapes) along with the sounds create a transitory effect that takes us through the imagery as though something materialises and then suddenly vanishes. Yet- they all align to the sound of a heartbeat which could be conceptualising the universe as a living thing.

The darkness in the video seems to engulf the light yet they both seem to invade each other and fight for dominance throughout the video. The mandala effect warps the perception and takes us towards an abstract representation of the perception for further imagining of the light and dark. The mention of Anish Kapoor’s vantablack patent in the description seems to hint at that darkness is commodified which is ironic as black, here as a concept, should be unclaimed and unpossessed. This creates a critique of the idea of ownership in the art world and the constraints this causes on the exploration of art and how it limits artistic creation.
