Angel of Protection (2024) is an acrylic painting which shows remarkable usage of geometry and colour theory. The painting is centred on a vertical axis divided into two connected hemispheres and a triangle. The top half of the painting contrasts with blue and orange, which brings together the calmness and warmth of the orange and the peace of the blue. These colours have thus been converted into energy and are the target of the viewer’s gaze as the viewer is guided to these two colours through the triangle.
Beneath the two contrasting colours; there is the triangle which helps to ground the painting and guide the viewer upwards. Within the brown triangle is another triangle- one which has been outlined in red of which a line comes out of to also guide the viewer upwards. Within the red triangle has a rainbow at the base- the rainbow channels the energy of the light spectrum which could be interpreted as connecting to a higher realm as light has no limit to how much it can travel.
The earthy brown of the outside triangle gives great contrast to the rainbow inside the red-outlined triangle and the semicircle at the top. These elements within the painting help to create a meditative and connective feel—that it is no longer simply a painting but rather something that channels energy.
Angel of Ecstasy (2024) presents a circle with wings (in which is formed like an angel) with a smaller sun-like circle as its head. The larger circle with the rings; seem to pulsate and alternates between different shades of red and white. Thus it resembles rippling energy coming from the centre of the angel. This, therefore, has given the painting a rhythm or a heartbeat that helps it come alive.
The white wings are positioned in a way that makes them seem like flying. The wings themselves are symbolic of an angelic power that contrasts with the strong reds within the background- thus pushing the wings outside of the painting as though it is moving towards the viewer. The red, understanding the energy of the title; ‘ecstasy’, could resemble life and vitality. While the whites of the painting could be a transcendence into this form or state of ecstasy.
The background of the painting is swirling with small black lines against the strong reds. These swirls help to give it motion and much more depth pushing the figure out of the painting. This motion also pulsates and exerts energy from the canvas towards the viewer. Thus, Beedell has successfully utilised contrast to create a bold painting which steals the viewers attention to invite them into a ecstatic trance.
